African Rhythms, KFAI 05/31/12

May 31, 2012

This week’s African Rhythms is an exploration of Afrobeat: its birth and development over 40 years ago and countless modern incarnations, from the earliest music of Fela Kuti and Tony Allen to today’s artists like Antibalas and Ocote Soul Sounds who draw upon the rhythms of Afrobeat as inspiration for their music. Melanie Marshall from the cast of Fela! joins us during the first half hour. The show is streaming at the KFAI site for two weeks.

African Rhythms, KFAI 04/21/11

April 21, 2011

We’ve been talking about the shows for weeks and the time has come: Calypso royalty Mighty Sparrow and Calypso Rose are appearing at the Dakota tonight, and Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen’s long-awaited show at the Cedar is this Saturday, April 23. On today’s edition of African Rhythms we heard tracks from Sparrow and Tony Allen (on his own and with Fela Ransome-Kuti on a 1971 tune that made Fela a sensation in Nigeria) along with a wide variety of African and African-inspired music that we could barely fit into the 2 hour time slot. The show is available as an MP3 stream for two weeks at the KFAI site, where you can also find the playlist (posted here as well).

You can stream the show here for two weeks; set list follows the break.

Global Beat 11/19/08

November 19, 2008

I sat in for Doug Cain today on the Global Beat show at KFAI. We fit in a couple of tracks from the new Amp Fiddler/Sly & Robbie disc, plus recent cuts from Rokia Traore (above), Juana Molina, Buika, Seu Jorge, and lots more. You can stream the show here for two weeks; playlist after the break.

Groove Garden 7/26/08

July 26, 2008

Ah, the joys of live radio. Tonight I had the privilege of guest hosting the Groove Garden show on KFAI and brought listeners a smattering of dead air along with the entertaining sound of a record being cued up while another is playing. Oh, and I forgot to back announce a few songs. Even so, we did hear some nice new music from Buika, Allá, Hercules & Love Affair and Seun Kuti, plus classics from Shuggie Otis (seen above), James Brown, Chaz Jankel, Love Unlimited, Curtis Mayfield, Ini Kamoze, and many others. You can stream the show, warts and all, for two weeks here. The playlist follows the break.
