Global Beat, KFAI 03/02/11

March 2, 2011

So much cool new music to get to on today’s edition of Global Beat including tracks from Los Chicharrons, Lucinda Williams, Ebo Taylor, Nostalgia 77, Mayra Andrade, and the insanely prolific Shawn Lee. We took more than a few left turns along the way and wrapped it all up in a neat two hour package that you can check out via MP3 stream at the KFAI site, where you can also peep the playlist (posted here as well after the break.)

Global Beat, KFAI 01/19/11

January 19, 2011

New music releases have slowed down a little bit through the holidays so I mostly relied on the tried and true on today’s episode of Global Beat (I did sneak in new/old cuts from Brownout and the Afro Soul-Tet). Along the way we heard timeless tracks from Gregory Isaacs, Bembeya Jazz, PM Dawn and the heretofore lesser mentioned Pluto Shervington. The show is available in its entirety for two weeks as an MP3 stream at the KFAI site where you can also scan the playlist (posted here as well, after the break).

It was a great pleasure to debut a couple of tracks from the gorgeous new CD called Afrocubism (a  summit meeting of top musicians from Mali and Cuba) alongside diverse soulful and funky tracks from Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Jamaica, Brazil and points beyond on today’s edition of Global Beat. The show is available as an MP3 stream for two weeks at the KFAI site, where you can also find the playlist (here as well, after the break).

I don’t participate in the Cult of the New but somehow great new tracks keep showing up in time to play them on Global Beat. Today’s case in point: freshness from Radio Citizen, Chico Mann, Bilal, Belleruche, Natacha Atlas, Jed & Lucia, and Sara Mitra – all new tracks! – leavened with classics from Milton Nascimento, K. Frimpong, Luiz Bonfá and many more. You can hear the show via MP3 stream at the KFAI site for two weeks; the complete playlist is posted both there and here, after the break.

The EBS machine took over the last few minutes of today’s Global Beat with some kind of demonic loop but you can still enjoy most of the two hour mix of reggae, samba, afrobeat and chicha via MP3 streaming at the KFAI site (available for two weeks). The playlist is posted both there and here, after the break.

Today’s show featured new tracks from contemporary powerhouses Orgone and Aloe Blacc plus a healthy mix of Senegalese rhumba, highlife from Ghana, Soviet funk and other soulful music from around the big rock. Eric Foss from Secret Stash Records stopped by during the second hour to recount his recent journey to Lima, Peru to look for rare records and to record contemporary Afro-Peruvian musicians. The show is available as an MP3 stream for two weeks at the KFAI site where you can find the complete playlist (also posted here after the break).
